First Day School was busy in March!!  We started by learning about Prudence Crandall, a Quaker woman living in Connecticut who started the first school for Black girls, and also learned about “Jim Crow”.  Several of our children and an adult attended a Junior Yearly Meeting Retreat at Wellesley Meeting the first weekend in March.  We spent the rest of March celebrating holidays.  We heard the story of Passover and how the Israelites escaped from slavery in Egypt.  Two of our members attended a “Model Seder” co-sponsored by Temple Beth Sholom and by Faith Community Church.  Then we learned about Islam and Ramadan, finding the direction to Mecca, making prayer rugs, building minarets, seeing what a Koran looks like, and hearing the Islamic call to prayer, the Adhan.  Then it was time for another Jewish holiday, Purim, where we learned about the bravery of Esther and the treachery of Hamann (boo!!) and made Hamantaschen cookies to share.  Finally, it was time to celebrate Easter, with a story about how loved ones who are no longer with us can still teach us, and the annual Easter Egg Hunt. We are still making plans for April, but it looks like it will include celebrating Eid al-Fitr, the feast that ends Ramadan, learning about and sharing more time with our trees, and celebrating the Pink Moon.  On April 8, a partial solar eclipse will be visible from our area of Massachusetts; by traveling farther into New York or Vermont, you can see a total solar eclipse.
