October Children’s Program News!

In September, First Day School learned about which Native American nations lived on the land where we live, and where Framingham Friends Meeting is located.  We learned why they no longer own this land but we also learned that Native Americans are “still here”.  We learned about local nations that are active and have powwows that the public is invited to attend.  Then we celebrated the Full Corn Full Moon and celebrated summer and September birthdays with cupcakes.  Cannon played Happy Birthday and a moon song for us.  Then we got reacquainted with our “personal trees” and made notes in our tree journals.  On the last Sunday, we had a supervised “Free Play Day” so that parents and teachers could spend time in Meeting for Worship.  We plan to do this on the last Sunday of each month this year.

For October, Lee Miller is going to tell us about his past and upcoming trips to Nepal and get us started on a 2nd-hand clothing drive so he can take the clothing with him to Nepal in November.  We learned about migrants, refugees, and undocumented immigrants and then prepared for the FUNdraiser for migrant housing on October 20.  And we had fun with Free Play on the last Sunday of the month.

Parents of our older children are working with Adam Hurley to set up a Dungeons and Dragons group that would probably meet once a month.  Adam is a professional dungeon master (seriously) and live action role play designer and leader for his work; we feel so fortunate to have his help with this.  We have also set aside some time after Meeting for Worship on November 10 for FDS parents, caregivers, and teachers to meet with the Ministry and Counsel Committee to talk about how we can better engage our children in worship.
